Development

Umpires are an integral part of the netball community. Their efforts are sometimes underestimated and unappreciated, and as such the number and quality of umpires has dwindled.

In an effort to turn this around, to encourage not only the continued participation but also the enjoyment of umpires, Garville Netball Club has taken steps to implement a structured developmental program in support of our Club Umpires.

All Club Umpires are expected to obtain their Level 1 accreditation. At the beginning of each winter season a Level 1 course is run for all club umpires to attend. This provides new umpires with some experience before the start of the season. Any beginner umpires are also advised to complete the beginners online officiating course available on the ausport website (under External links on this page). This website gives an insight into the general responsibilities of officiating personnel.

Throughout the season, Club Mentors regularly monitor all club umpires, offering support and advice where appropriate. This ensures that all Umpires are supported throughout the season, and continue to develop their skills. From this, potential or future top level umpires are identified and any extra available support offered.

Any further courses or opportunities, such as the Section 1 theory exam or Level 2 Accreditation Course are available via the External links on this page. Any umpire wishing to further their own development is advised to utilise these resources.

Any umpires identified by mentors as potential or future top level umpires are advised to umpire games in the intermediate timeslot, as their development is then supported by the Netball SA UMPI Program through which all intermediate umpires are mentored by qualified and experienced mentors each week.

For any information on becoming an umpire or developing your skills as an umpire, or becoming a mentor for Garville Netball Club, please contact our Umpire Director.
