OUR ALLI IS ONE OF A KIND

Question: when is a wing defender a dominator and a comedienne at the same time?
Answer: when she’s Garville’s Alli Evans.
Alli showed both talents in our great 19-goal win over Tango to retain top spot on the ladder. Only high quality players can dominate a game from WD and that’s what Alli did over four quarters with her package of interceptions, deflections, back-up, and great voice – no-one demands the ball better than Alli.

But Alli also showed her flair for comedy – even if it was unintentional. During the third quarter she injured her finger, called time-out, received treatment, then returned to the court in the WA position. Seems Alli forgot she was our WD – until she was told she was on the wrong transverse line. But Alli’s break in concentration was only fleeting and within seconds she trapped a loose ball, and then took a brilliant interception that resulted in a Taylee Howard goal.

We established a match-winning lead of 15 goals by half-time, via some great feeding from Jordie Harrison in WA. Jordie specialised in long bomb passes to our shooters, and Kim Wade in centre was gut-running when not busy intercepting or deflecting balls in heavy traffic.
And our defence of Alli, Gab Stengle (GK), and Esther Young (GD) was as strong and resolute as ever. We lost the third quarter by four goals which posed the question of how would our girls respond in the final term. The answer was emphatic – a big lift in intensity from all players that reflected our pride and spirit. We won the final quarter by 8 goals and the catalysts were our outstanding leaders Gab (captain) and Kim (vice-captain). Gab was awesome with her interceptions, loose ball gets, and rebounds. Kim was relentless with her hustle and bustle, and great desperation for the ball.
Final score: Garville 57, Tango 38.

Best: Alli Evans, Jordie Harrison, Gab Stengle, Kim Wade.

HAT-TRICK OF WINS

Our season gathered strong momentum with a hat-trick of wins against Cougars.
The emphatic 20-goal margin was driven by a team dominance in every third of the court. But the highlight was a brilliant second quarter when we outscored Cougars by 9 goals as our mid-court and shooters ran riot.

Mids Kelly Altmann (WA) and Jo Sutton (C) offered great supply to our shooters with Jo forcing turnovers at will, and Kelly beating her opponent with speed and great third and fourth efforts. Chloe Drogemuller (GA) and Liz Marzahn (GS) teamed well and Chloe had an awesome first quarter with an interception, good hands, speed, and long goals. Lis was a great back-up for starting GS Georgie Virgo who was in Canberra training with the AIS unders 19s. Also damaging in that second term was Anna Wyatt whose drive and anticipation made her a powerhouse. She and Sam Poolman (GK) formed a strong and tight circle defence.

We lost the initiative momentarily in the third term but long goals from Lis made sure we won the quarter. Tamika Arias returned to her comfort zone in GK in the final quarter and had her characteristic big impact. She teamed with Anna to force a held ball with tight defence and they have formed a good rapport in the hustle and bustle of the circle.
Final score: Garville 62, Cougars 42.

Best: Kelly Altmann, Anna Wyatt, Chloe Drogemuller, Lis Marzahn.

COURAGEOUS TO THE CORE

Our ressies dug deep to reveal enormous pride with a gutsy win over Woods.
The 2-goal margin stretched our unbeaten record to 6 after we were seriously challenged by a physical Woods.
Each of our players contributed well, but it was Esther Young in GD and Helen Mason in GA who were responsible for match-winning bursts in the final quarter when an upset loss loomed. Esther created 4 turnovers in 4 minutes with an inspired series of rebounds, deflections and interceptions. And Helen shot clutch goals, including some from long range, when we desperately needed them. She showed her typical strong hands and body with clever positioning and demanding the ball. But Helen also revealed an impressive leadership quality with her less experienced partner Taylee Howard (GS) playing only her first full ressies game for the season.

Esther built momentum with each quarter and played with desperation especially in the second term when we were heavily outscored. She and Gab Strengle (GK) probably form the best defensive circle in the comp. Gab was awesome early in the game and was the driving force behind our 6-goal lead at quarter time. Her powerful attack on the ball and great anticipation to win interceptions makes her, along with Kim Wade in centre, the heart and soul of our team. We outscored Woods by 6 goals in the third term, thanks to the inspirational Alli Evans who took over at WD at half-time. Alli was the spark we needed to stop the Woods momentum and she duly delivered with an interception and deflection in her first minute on court. She sustained the intensity and will be an important player in the showdown next week against the competition’s other pacesetter, Matrics.
The Woods contest had loomed as a danger game for us as they lost only narrowly to the unbeaten Matrics.
Final score: Garville 44, Woods 42.

Best: Esther Young, Helen Mason, Gab Stengle, Alli Evans
